Nadia Comaneci was born on December 12, 1961 within Gheorghe Gheorghiu Dej (now Onesti), Romania. Nadia is the Romanian Olympic gymnast. She holds the record for being given 10/10 points in an Olympic performance. Comaneci was spotted by Bela Karolyi who was later her Romanian gymnastics instructor when she was only six years old. First competing in the junior national championships of Romania in the year 1969, she finished 13th. And in 1970, was crowned champion. In her 1972 first international event, which was a preolympics junior competition for countries in the Communist bloc, she won 3 gold medals. Then in 1973 and 1975, she was awarded the All-around Junior Champion. When she competed for the first time at the senior level, Lyudmila Turkishcheva from Russia took home five gold medals, as well as one silver. In 1976, she became the first female athlete in the world to use a backwards-double salto in order to take off the parallel bars.
